Breaking news from

far below expectations and recent monthly gains, the Labor Department
reported Friday. The unemployment rate also ticked up to 9.1 percent
from 9 percent.

The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment
benefits fell to 422,000, a drop of 6,000 from the previous week.
The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment
benefits for the week ended May 28 fell to 422,000, a drop of 6,000
from the previous week’s revised figure of 428,000, according to the
U.S. Department of Labor.
The four-week moving average was 425,500, a decrease of 14,000 from the
previous week’s revised average of 439,500.
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ended May 21 were
in California (7,053), Massachusetts (1,948), South Carolina (1,066),
Wisconsin (1,019) and Pennsylvania (959). The largest decreases were in
Alabama (1,448), Oregon (1,104), Kentucky (696), Idaho (557) and Hawaii
(438).
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the
week ending April 30 was 7.68 million, a decrease of 56,742 from the
previous week.
The Dayton-area unemployment rate fell to 9 percent in April, which was
the lowest level in more than two years.
And the region’s jobless rate may be getting upcoming boosts as several
notable employers are hiring.
GE Aviation, a division of General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE), initially
plans to hire 10 to 15 workers and as many as 200 people eventually for
its 115,000-square-foot Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research
and Development Center — dubbed EPISCENTER — on the University of
Dayton’s campus on River Park Drive.
Projects Unlimited, a Vandalia-based aerospace electronics company,
plans to hire 20 employees for its new cable and harness division.
Caterpillar Logistics Services Inc., a unit of Caterpillar Inc., plans
to eventually hire more than 500 people for its 1 million-square-foot
distribution facility in Clayton.
