Cincinnati Bengals
win title: Worst pro franchise
by Joe Cogliano
Thursday, June 16, 2011
Being “thrifty” has finally caught up to Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike
Brown.
Known for being a penny pincher, Brown is bringing a not-so-flattering
title to the Queen City: Worst franchise in pro sports.
ESPN The Magazine will bestow that honor on the Bengals in its Friday
issue, which ranks all 122 franchises in the National Football League ,
National Basketball Association , National Hockey League and Major
League Baseball . Its annual “Best Franchises in Sports” ranking is
based on how team’s pay back fans for the time, money and emotion they
invest.
Over the years, Brown has been ripped for failing to invest in the
team, which lacks a general manager, indoor practice facility or pro
sports sized scouting department. According to the list, Brown’s team
now ranks dead last in fan relations, title track and players.
It fell from an already dismal 90th place last year.
Is it any wonder fewer fans from Dayton are buying tickets and making
the drive?
The Cincinnati Reds rated far better, ranking 15th on the magazine’s
list (up from 43rd last year) while the Green Bay Packers , winners of
the latest Super Bowl, claim distinction as pro sports’ best franchise.
