Boehner: JEC Study Shows Spending Cuts Support Job Growth

Congressman Boehner Urges Obama Economic Team to Review New JEC Study Showing Spending Cuts Support Job Growth - Mar 15, 2011

Washington-Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) today called attention to the release of a new study by Joint Economic Committee (JEC) Republicans that shows cutting government spending significantly will support private-sector job creation, and called on the members of President Obama’s economic team to read the study.

“To help our economy get back to creating jobs, we need to reduce uncertainty for small businesses in America, and that cannot happen until we reverse the spending binge that has been going on in Washington.  As this new study shows, the spending binge in Washington has hurt job creation – and cutting spending will reduce uncertainty and encourage businesses to make investments that create jobs.

“The Joint Committee on Taxation last year produced a widely-reported study that showed failing to stop all of the tax hikes that were scheduled for January 1, 2011 would result in a job-crushing tax increase on 50 percent of the small business income in America.  Months later, President Obama and his team changed their approach and worked with Republicans on an agreement that stopped all of the tax hikes.  I believe this new report by the Joint Economic Committee may have a similar impact on the jobs debate in Washington, and I urge the president and his entire economic team to review it.

“I commend Chairman Brady and the staff of the Joint Economic Committee for their excellent work on this important study, and join Leader Cantor, Whip McCarthy, Chairman Hensarling, and Chief Deputy Whip Roskam in urging legislators on both sides of the aisle to consider its significant findings.”

NOTE: In recent weeks, some of America’s top economic leaders, including Stanford University economics professor John B. Taylor and former Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan, have released analyses indicating that excessive government intervention in the economy has been contributing to sluggish job creation.  Last month, Speaker Boehner released a statement signed by 150 American economists urging President Obama and his economic team to abandon their emphasis on “stimulus” spending policies and work in a bipartisan fashion to make immediate and substantial cuts in government spending to help reduce uncertainty for private-sector job creators.
