Publication puts City in Top 100 Micropolitan’s in United States
Greenville- Greenville has been recognized by Site Selection magazine,
a national publication devoted to economic development, as one of the
Top 100 Micropolitans (city with a population between 10 -50,000) in
the United States, based on 2010 development project statistics.
The Darke County Economic Development Office was notified this week of
The City’s inclusion in the upcoming March issue of the publication.
The publication determined it’s rankings by the number of corporate
projects’ communities had in 2010 that met specific criteria determined
by the magazine. Greenville had three qualifying projects during
the year, good for a tie for 41st in the rankings. The magazine
ranked 576 communities nationwide for the project.
“We’re honored and pleased by the ranking,” stated Greenville Mayor
Mike Bowers. “We were blessed to have a lot of opportunity in 2010.
Thanks to everyone’s effort that was involved in these projects, we
were able to capitalize on many of those prospects.”
The magazine focused on new corporate location projects with
significant impact. It did not track retail and government projects, or
schools and hospitals. New facilities and expansions included in the
analysis met at least one of three criteria: (a) involved a capital
investment of at least $1 million, (b) created at least 50 new jobs, or
(c) added at least 20,000 sq. ft. of new floor area.
Greenville was surpassed by only four other Ohio communities.
Only one of those (Wapakoneta) surpassed Greenville by more than one
project.
“Only circumstances out of the City’s hands kept the total from being
even higher during 2010,” said Darke County Economic Development
Director Marc Saluk. “Frankly, their efforts on some unrealized
projects were equally impressive. City personnel have definitely
demonstrated that they will do what it takes to land jobs for the
citizens of Greenville and Darke County.”
According to Saluk, what is also impressive is that Greenville’s 2010
total of successful projects is even higher. He states that there
were many other successful job creating or company retaining projects
in Greenville in 2010 that simply weren’t large enough to qualify for
the rankings (see accompanying chart).
“I’d estimate that the City’s actions helped retain or create about 160
jobs in 2010, while losing none. This total only reflects
completed projects. There are many projects that carried over
into 2011 that will directly impact employment in the near future,”
explained Saluk
Saluk also explained that on-going projects in other parts of Darke
County could also yield results in 2011.
Bowers said that Greenville’s successful 2010 is attributable to many
individuals including the City’s ED Team that currently consists of The
Mayor, Council President John Burkett, Auditor Nancy Myers, Law
Director Jeff Amick, and Safety/Service Director Rod Hale. Also
playing a major role in development projects is City Engineer Joy
Rodenburgh and her staff, as well as the members of the Greenville
Community Improvement Corporation and Darke County Economic Development.
