Report: Top 15
bedbug-infested cities
Wednesday, May 25, 2011
Bedbugs are getting tired of the Dayton region. The city, which ranked
No. 8 last year, now ranks No. 12 on the list of most bedbug-infested
cities in the U.S.
That’s according to this year’s ranking from the Terminix pest-removal
company, which considered information on customer calls and discoveries
by its employees at 350 U.S. branches.
New York City again ranked No. 1 on the list.
Here are the top 15 bedbug cities in 2011 according to Terminix:
New York
Cincinnati
Detroit
Chicago
Philadelphia
Denver
Washington, D.C.
Los Angeles
Boston
San Francisco
Columbus
Dayton
Baltimore
Louisville, Ky.
Dallas
Terminix issued a reminder to folks traveling over the Memorial Day
Holiday. Hotels are commonplace locations where bedbugs are spread, so
be sure to check beds for bedbugs and blood spots. They also
recommended hanging all clothing, rather than putting in drawers, and
store luggage as far from the bed as possible.
Bedbugs had become big business for pest companies around Dayton, as
some pest experts said incidents of the bugs increased 100 percent.
The nocturnal insects, which are flat, reddish-brown blood-feeders
roughly the size and shape of apple seeds, returned early this decade
after nearly a half-century of inactivity.
The critters made national news last year as bedbugs were spotted in
all sorts of locations.
For example, bedbugs led to a shutdown of the Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE)
flagship store in Manhattan, and were found in other New York retailers
including Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) and a theater in Times
Square, according to media reports.
