Ohio ranks No. 6 for
job growth
Monday, April 25, 2011
Ohio ranked No. 6 in the country for job growth, according to a new
study.
Ohio was among the states with the highest employment gains in March,
continuing a slow recovery from the recession that saw the state lose
thousands of jobs.
The latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show Ohio
had an increase of 65,700 nonfarm jobs between March 2010 and the same
month this year. That was the sixth-highest gain among all states.
Texas led the way with an increase of 251,100 nonfarm jobs during the
one-year period.
Next were two resurgent states that had been recent fixtures at the
bottom of the employment standings: California (up 171,300 jobs in the
past year) and Michigan (up 79,000).
All but three states added jobs between March 2010 and March 2011. The
exceptions were Kansas (down 6,000 jobs), New Jersey (down 1,700) and
New Mexico (down 100).
North Dakota posted the biggest gain in percentage terms, up 4.18
percent in the past year, while Kansas was again last with a drop of
0.45 percent.
Among the biggest gains in jobs in the Dayton region recently include
the planned $51 million research and development facility GE Aviation
held the groundbreaking for this month. GE Aviation, a division of
General Electric (NYSE: GE), chose Dayton and the former headquarters
building of NCR Corp. (NYSE: NCR) out of a number of different possible
locations.
NVR Inc., parent of homebuilder Ryan Homes, has purchased a building in
Dayton’s Northwest Industrial Park and will locate a manufacturing
operation there, with hiring set to start this summer.
Overall, the region is growing with a new Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT)
facility and Boston law firm WilmerHale opening a large facility just
10 minutes from downtown Dayton that is hiring more than 200 people.
The region also is close to finding the first new tenant for the former
General Motors (NYSE: GM) assembly plant in Moraine, which hit the
region and the city of Dayton hard as it cost thousands of jobs locally
and hit suppliers to the plant as well.
Teradata Corp. also has been on a hiring binge recently locally, as
well as MetLife Inc. and Cincinnati-based grocery giant Kroger Co.
A recent report indicated that Dayton has added 2,000 jobs in the past
year.
