Greenville schools to
regroup for next campaign
Darke County November Election…
By Bob Robinson
“There are three more
opportunities for this to happen. Our kids
deserve the best and the state dollars are there.”
Greenville Supt. Susie Reigle said the School Board would make the
final decision regarding when and if there would be another attempt to
pass the levy for a new K-8 building on North Ohio, but added that it
was likely there would be another try.
“Our kids deserve the best,” she said. “The dollars are still there. I
don’t think we can turn our backs on the money the state is making
available.”
On Wednesday, in a prepared statement, Reigle said:
“Over the next several weeks, the campaign leaders will study precinct
results and consult with the Board of Education for a decision
regarding when the issue should again be brought to the voters,” she
said. “There are three more opportunities for this to happen - March,
June and August.”
Tuesday night Reigle said they will regroup, look at the precincts that
failed and determine a new plan of action.
At the new A&B Coffee & Cake Co., where Greenville School Levy
supporters were meeting to watch the results of the election,
volunteers noted their disappointment.
“I think we did everything right,” said Bob Rhoades, who spearheaded
the campaign.
Reigle noted, however, that for the kids, they have to try again. “We
have to secure the public,” she said, adding that the election
campaigns don't cost the taxpayers a penny.
"They are paid for through the donations and fundraising of Citizens
for Quality Greenville Schools."
The levy failed by 649 votes, 4194 to 3545.
On a lighter note, Joe Payne, who also expressed his disappointment
over the failure of the levy, appreciated the more than 1000 voters who
supported him despite his withdrawal from a bid for Greenville School
Board.
“I am honored,” he said, grinning.
At Paw’s Bingo, dozens of supporters celebrated the victory of an
elated Municipal Court Judge, Julie Monnin.
“I’m thrilled!” she said, adding “Thank God it’s over!”
A relative said she’d seen Monnin “up” before but this was probably the
most excited she’d ever seen her.
“There is a beauty to getting through an election,” Monnin said, “but
to do it with a win is wonderful!”
Regarding her plans for the coming term, Monnin said good enough is
never good enough.
“We want to fine-tune things,” she said. “We will be visiting other
courts to learn from them. We want to work smarter.”
On the degree of support and intensity of her re-election campaign,
Monnin said simply, “We were a well-oiled machine!”
To those who supported her… “Thank you!!!”
The final vote tally for Municipal Judge was 9733 for Monnin, 7656 for
her challenger Jesse Green, a spread of 2077 votes.
In her prepared statement, Reigle also thanked those who supported the
District’s levy campaign.
“Thank you for your many hours of work and your votes in support of the
bond issue… We will keep you updated and again count on your help and
support as we forge ahead to secure a new school for our community,”
she said.
