the tale

By Bob Robinson
Greenville Schools Levy defeated; Monnin re-elected; Sommers, Mattix
chosen for Greenville School Board, Greenville Library Levy passes;
Godwin elected to Greenville City Council Ward One. State Issues 1
& 2 fail; Issue 3 passes.
The expressions tell the tale as Greenville Schools Treasurer Carla
Surber, Superintendent Susie Riegle, re-elected Board Member Jim Sommer
and several Greenville staff members watch the numbers come in on the
Greenville Levy. It failed, 4194 to 3545.
Darke County Municipal Judge Julie Monnin was celebrating after winning
her re-election bid against challenger Jesse Green, 9733 to 7656.
Both Library levies – Greenville and Arcanum – passed. Greenville
Library got the nod by a 4095 to 3671 margin, while Arcanum passed 1413
to 827.
In the contest for Greenville School Board, Fred Matix was elected with
the most votes, 4470. Incumbent Jim Sommer was re-elected with 3491
votes. Diana Banta received 2815 votes. Joe Payne, who had officially
withdrawn from the election, received 1375 votes.
Clarence Godwin gets 582 votes over Isabel Culbertson’s 419 votes to
fill the seat of retiring Ward One Greenville City Councilwoman
Kathleen Floyd. In Greenville Township, Justin Hines is elected with
3212 votes over Maury Miles’ 1854 votes.
State Issue 1, Retirement Age extension for judges, failed 62 percent
to 38 percent. State Issue 2, Supporting Senate Bill 5, failed 61
percent to 39 percent, and State Issue 3, allowing no mandate to
purchase health insurance, passed 66 percent to 34 percent.
Darke County voters agreed by the same margin for Issues 1 and 3; Issue
2 also failed in Darke County, but only by 57 votes.
Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine released the following
statement this evening regarding the results of today’s statewide Issue
2 election:
“While ‘repeal’ may have made for a handy campaign slogan, it’s no
replacement for the fair reforms which would have given local
communities and schools the flexibility they needed to get taxes and
spending under control.
“Ohio Democrats have not offered one alternative plan or even ideas of
their own; however some have acknowledged that State Issue 2 possesses
reasonable reforms which enjoy broad-based public support. Our
schools and local governments face crippling revenue shortfalls and
remain desperately in need of budgetary tools which will help prevent
further job loss.
“With this election now behind us, it’s time for Democrats to stop
standing in the way of meaningful reform for our state and join with
Governor John Kasich and General Assembly Republicans as they continue
to lead in passing reforms that move Ohio toward economic recovery.”
Election wrap-up, along with comments from Greenville Supt. Susie
Riegle and Municipal Judge Julie Monnin still to come.
