Pike files her
petition for March Primary
Primary Election season begins…
By Bob Robinson
Darke County Clerk of Courts Cindy Pike filed her petition for the
office in the March Primary on Monday. If elected in November, it will
be her fifth 4-year term in office.
Less than a month after the November election, the March Primary has
begun. While a number of petitions have been picked up, only two others
had been filed to date. Darke County Commissioner Mike Rhoades (term to
begin Jan. 3) has filed for the Primary, while Darke County Engineer
Jim Surber has also filed.
Filing deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7.
According to Pike, the Clerk of Courts is the “Keeper of the Record”
for the Common Pleas Court. She added that the duties of the office
also include being in charge of the county’s Auto Titling and issuing
passports.
The valid signatures needed for a candidate to be placed on the ballot
vary according to office. The requirement for Pike, along with other
county candidates, is 50. While the law allows up to three times the
required signatures to be submitted, Pike turned in 73, a number
typical for local elections. If the needed signatures are verified, the
Petition will be certified by the Darke County Elections Board on Dec.
12.
Primary elections are held to determine a party’s candidate in the
November General Election. Party or Independent ballots will be given
to voters based upon their preference. Pike and Rhoades will be on the
Republican ballot, while Surber will be on the Democrat ballot. Only
those individuals requesting party ballots may vote for their party’s
candidates. All voters will be voting on issues for their respective
communities or districts.
It should be noted that the 2012 Primary will also address state and
national party candidates, including the Presidency and, in Ohio, the
Senate seat currently being held by Sen. Sherrod Brown.
A number of individuals have taken out petitions for Darke County
offices but haven’t yet filed them. Petitions may have been requested
by the potential candidates or others on their behalf.
Clerk of Courts: Barbara Martin and Amanda Farley.
Darke County Commissioner (term to begin Jan. 2): Diane Delaplane,
incumbent, and Aaron Ward, challenger. Jeannette Royer has obtained
petitions for both seats.
Darke County Sheriff: Toby Spencer, incumbent, and Daniel Light.
Darke County Treasurer: Scott Zumbrink, incumbent, and Jeremy Hittle.
Zumbrink is a Democrat and Hittle is a Republican. If both petitions
are filed and certified, they will not face each other until November.
Darke County Juvenile Probate Judge: Jason Aslinger, appointed for an
unfinished term, and Jim Detling.
