Ohio unemployment rate down to 9 percent

Friday, November 18, 2011

Ohio’s unemployment rate in October was 9 percent, improving on the 9.1 percent rate in September and 9.7 percent a year ago, the state’s Department of Job and Family Services reported Friday.

About 526,000 workers in the state were unemployed in October, an improvement from the 534,000 who were jobless in September. A year ago, Ohio had 571,000 unemployed workers, the organization reported.

Unemployment nationwide followed the same trend, falling to 9 percent last month compared to 9.1 percent in September.

Education and health sectors continued their gains, adding 24,400 jobs since October 2010. Goods-producing industries added 19,900 jobs over the previous year while government jobs decreased by 9,500.

County, city and metropolitan area unemployment data is scheduled to be released on Tuesday.
