13th Quarter
Jinx for Obama?
By Susan Jones
April 23, 2012
(CNSNews.com) - A new Gallup Poll says President Barack Obama’s job
approval rating stands at 45.9% for his 13th quarter in office. That’s
up a bit from last summer and fall -- but it remains below the averages
of presidents who went on to win election.
Gallup noted that all presidents re-elected since Eisenhower have had
average approval ratings above 50% during their 13th quarters in office.
“Obama remains short of the historical comfort zone -- above 50%
approval -- that most successfully re-elected presidents achieved
during their re-election year. However, he is not far below that
threshold, and has seen his approval rating improve over the last two
quarters,” Gallup noted.
The poll results are based on more than 45,000 Gallup Daily tracking
interviews conducted with random adults from Jan. 20 through April 19
-- the 13th quarter Obama has been in office.
Gallup found that Obama’s approval rating reached as high as 50% in
daily tracking (April 3-5) before settling in the mid- to high 40%
range in recent days.
Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush were both below 50% in
their 13th quarter and neither won re-election.
Carter’s 13th-quarter average (47.7%) was slightly higher than Obama’s,
but it tanked during Carter’s 14th quarter, to 35.8%. The elder Bush’s
13th quarter average (41.8%) was lower than Obama’s, and it also
dropped into the 30s in subsequent quarters.
George W. Bush averaged above 51.0% approval in his 13th quarter but
slipped below 50% in his 14th. However, his approval rating recovered
to 50.2% in his 15th quarter, which ended just weeks before the
election.
Other re-elected presidents remained above 50% right up to the election.
