Greenville City School District...
Susie Riegle
resigns, effective July 30
By Bob Robinson
Mattix: “She never
gave us any indication.”
“I am submitting my resignation for retirement purposes effective July
30, 2012. It has been my privilege to work with the students and staff
of Greenville City Schools.”
This letter of resignation from GCSD Supt. Susan Riegle was submitted
to the Greenville School Board around 8 to 8:30 this morning, according
to Greenville School Board Member Fred Mattix.
Riegle’s resignation follows that of Athletic Director/Head Football
Coach TJ Powers, who left the District to take the Football Coach, plus
a teaching position, at Arcanum Schools. Riegle had recently been
awarded a 1-year renewal contract for 2012-13 by the School Board.
Mattix said there had been no evidence that this was coming.
“She never gave us any indication,” he said.
Riegle has long had the reputation of being “for and about” her
students and was at the helm when the District received its first
“Excellent” rating on its 2010-11 Report Card.
“We’re EXCELLENT!” she said. “I am extremely happy with the results of
our 2010-11 district report card! The credit truly goes to our students
and staff who have worked together focusing on making every
instructional moment count in the classroom.”
She was at the helm when parts of the decorative outside molding came
down from the 85-year-old Greenville Junior High School. And she did
cartwheels when the students were able to return to the building after
repairs were made and the building was deemed safe.
“Susie’s a good person and a tireless worker,” Mattix said. “She really
cares about the kids. I remember when she was principal at East…
she did fantastic job.”
Riegle was also instrumental, along with Woodland Heights Principal,
Tammy Stritenberger, in talking CNO Editor Bob Robinson into giving
Woodland a try when he signed on as a substitute teacher for the
District and the other districts in the County. Robinson is currently
the only male teacher (substitute or otherwise) on the campus.
While Riegle’s letter specifically said “for retirement purposes,”
there is an unconfirmed report that she will be accepting a position in
a District in the Dayton area next year.
Mattix said there are always rumors going around, noting that Riegle
has 31 years in and if she can take her retirement and still enjoy
working somewhere else, he didn’t see a problem with it.
“We all have to do what’s best for our situations,” he said.
Mattix acknowledged that they have two positions to fill for the fall.
They both have to be addressed. The AD position deadline date is this
coming week. The Superintendent position has not been posted.
He said that the board hadn’t even had a chance to discuss it. It has to decide what they
are looking for in a Superintendent.
“We may have some people inside that we could look at,” he added.
CNO has left a message for Riegle for comment.
