Ag Director Daniels Visits Darke County Fair

On Tuesday August 21, 2012, David Daniels, Ohio State Agriculture
Director, visited the Darke County Fair. Starting a few minutes after
10:00 a.m. at the Republican Tent, the group, led by Representative Jim
Buchy, Ohio House District 84, toured through the Coliseum and then to
every animal display barn to reach the Future Farmers of America
display and activity area adjacent to the youth building. He arrived on
schedule for his high noon speech.
Daniels’ presentation was low key and extremely comfortable -- like a
friendly neighbor keeping you up to date. He stressed the importance of
the job on the farm. But he made a convincing effort to identify the
wide variety of occupations/tasks dependent on the farm but separate,
such as in food preparation, service and distribution, the application
of food product research in the medical field and the many facets of
food production in the fuel industry.
Daniels noted the stature of Darke County as No. 1 in corn and soy
beans, No. 2 in hog production, No. 4 in cattle and No. 7 in dairy
production. He noted that the leadership and technical knowledge taught
in schools, and emphasized in 4H and FFA, are essential to continued
growth and production in the state.
In spite of the significant problems associated with the drought –
Mother Nature’s contribution – the Department will continue efforts to
improve production methods and solutions to problems as they occur.
Representative Buchy thanked Daniels for his interest and activities
that benefit all Darke County farm activities and thanked everybody
associated with and supporting 4H and FFA, with special emphasis given
to the Versailles group.
County Commissioners Diane Delaplane and Mike Stegall offered closing
comments by expressing their appreciation to Daniels and the youth that
had worked to prepare this event.
The final speaker was Maddy Bucher, President of the Southwest region
of FFA. Her comments highlighted the effort to spread the word
regarding the goals of the FFA and the support from the local groups.
