U.S.
Representative John Boehner…
President
Obama’s Policies “Haven’t Fixed
Anything”
The Christian
Science Monitor hosted
a roundtable interview with Speaker John Boehner for more than 50
reporters at
the Republican
National Convention today.
In
his opening remarks, Boehner said the
convention would be an opportunity for the American people to learn
more about
the Romney-Ryan ticket and how they’re going to put Americans back to
work.
After spending August campaigning
for Republican candidates, Boehner said
it’s
clear that “this election is about jobs”:
“This
convention is going to give the American
people a chance to learn more about Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and how
they’re
going to put Americans back to work. I think they’re clearly qualified,
have
created jobs, they understand that government interference in the
private
marketplace makes it more difficult to create jobs. They’ll provide the
American people with the solutions we need – and the leadership we
deserve.”
“This
month, I traveled more than 9,000 miles
and did 47 events in 23 days. Wherever I went, the number one
issue I
heard about was jobs. If you thought people were asking ‘where are the
jobs?’
before, ‘you didn’t build that’ made it ten times worse. There are
always going
to be other issues and distractions, but this election is
about jobs.”
And
contrary to the president’s promise that
he’d fix the economy within three years (or it’d be a “one term
proposition”),
Boehner said President Obama’s policies “haven’t fixed
anything.”
Boehner's
underlying message: we can do better:
“[President
Obama] promised to fix the economy
– but he made it worse. Twenty-three million Americans are out of work;
the
worst stretch of unemployment since the Great Depression.”
“He
promised to cut the deficit in half – yet
he made it worse by adding more than $5 trillion to our national debt.”
“He
promised to fix health care – yet he made
it worse. Premiums are going up, millions could lose their plans, and
he cut
Medicare to pay for a new entitlement program.”
“He
promised to solve our energy crisis – yet,
made it worse. Gas prices have doubled during the president’s term in
office.”
“And
he also promised to change the tone in
Washington. Anyone who watches any TV, especially if you live in a
battleground
state like Ohio, I can tell you -- the ads will tell you that he’s made
it
worse.”
