Report:
Sequestration job numbers flawed

As if the
defense industry didn’t face enough uncertainty, now some insiders say
a
projection of 40,000 job losses in Ohio as a result of sequestration is
deeply
flawed.
To rebut a
recent report released by the Aerospace Industries Association, The
Brookings
Institution this week published “The Cracked Crystal Ball: The Problem
with
Predicting Defense Jobs and Sequestration.” While its authors admit
jobs would
certainly be lost if sequestration takes effect, they argue the
predictions of
job losses in specific locations are based on very crude, and even
erroneous,
assumptions.
Among the
problems with the AIA report, Brookings cites problems between the
scale of the
industry and the potential loss as well as an inflated ripple effect.
“To be very
kind, while they may make for good headlines, they are not useful for
actual
policy making,” the article said.
If
Brookings is correct, then the Dayton region is back to square one when
it
comes to trying figure out how sequestration play out here...
