Q&A: Justin Bayer, Welcome to College LLC

Justin Bayer had big dreams about revolutionizing the college visit, he just needed technology to catch up. 

In 2004, the University of Dayton graduate was running a tour program for the admissions office at an East Coast university when he had an epiphany. While laying in bed at 2 a.m., he decided to find out if the domain name welcometocollege.com was available. It was, so Bayer bought it for $16 and went back to bed. 

Six years later, he decided the time was right to strike out on his own and start what is now one of the few dot-coms in the Dayton area, Welcome to College LLC. Its Web site is billed as a one-stop shop for everything related to the campus visit while integrating social media for students to share their impressions. Colleges and universities across the U.S. are available to users on the site, but those schools signing on as partners can add their own content and track feedback. 

Welcome to College has grown its roster to nearly 30 schools, which pay as much as $20,000 annually to be a partner, depending on the extent of their service contract.
