Dayton near
bottom in self-employment rate

More than 9 million U.S. workers are extremely close to their bosses.
That’s because they’re self-employed.
The latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau
indicate that one of every 15 employees – 6.5 percent of the nation’s
work force – run their own unincorporated businesses, according to an
On Numbers analysis of data from the Census Bureau’s 2010 American
Community Survey. Among Ohio’s largest metropolitan areas, Dayton is
near the bottom for the share of its work force that is self-employed.
Dayton’s 19,000 self-employed workers represent 4.9 percent of its
nearly 390,000-person civilian work force. By comparison, Cleveland
sits at 4.7 percent, Cincinnati at 5.2 percent and Columbus at 5.4
percent.
The San Francisco region has the highest self-employment rate of any
major U.S. market with 197,300 workers running their own unincorporated
businesses, about 9.3 percent of the local work force. Los Angeles
comes next at 9 percent.
Overall, the highest rates of self-employment are found in tiny
micropolitan areas. Ohio’s top area in national rankings is Mount
Vernon, where 2,663 workers represent 9.4 percent of the work force.
Greenville ranked second in the state where 9.35 percent of its workers
are self employed.
The following database contains self-employment statistics for all 942
metropolitan and micropolitan areas across the country. Use the tab to
