Fifth Third
Bank has tied for the highest overdraft fees of any of the nation’s 14
largest
banks, according to a recent survey by the Consumer Federation of
America.
Fifth Third and Providence, R.I.-based Citizens Bank each charge $37
for some
overdrafts.
Fifth
Third’s fee looks slightly better in that it charges a lower amount
until the
fifth overdraft in a year, when the fee rises to $37. But that’s
changing June
27, when Fifth Third will start charging that amount for every
overdraft after
the first one. That’s the same policy Citizens uses.
Fifth Third
charges $25 for the first overdraft, while Citizens charges $22.
Cincinnati-based
Fifth Third is the largest bank operating in the Dayton region with
more than
$4 billion in deposits locally.
Making it
tougher for customers, another large local bank – U.S. Bank – also is
raising
overdraft fees later this month.
They’re also among the five banks the
Consumer Federation researched that use tiered fees, meaning rates go
up as
customers incur more overdrafts.
