Some state
legislators will start looking for answers on how to improve Ohio’s
manufacturing climate as part of an effort introduced Monday by House
Speaker
Bill Batchelder, R-Medina.
The Ohio
House’s 21st Century Manufacturing Task Force is being created to see
what can
be done to improve the state’s manufacturing competitiveness,
Batchelder said
in a release.
He has
turned to state Rep. Kirk Schuring, a Republican who represents the
manufacturing-heavy Canton area, to lead the bipartisan task force. The
other
eight House members for the task force have yet to be appointed, said
Mike
Dittoe, spokesman for the House Republican Caucus.
Batchelder
has charged the task force with holding five public hearings across the
state
in the coming months to gather information on a range of manufacturing
issues.
Among them are identifying resources to help the industry, impediments
that
curtail manufacturing and unique characteristics of each section of the
state
that could spur new manufacturing opportunities. In addition, the task
force
will look for ways for manufacturing to partner with higher education
research
and development efforts.
The task
force is to make recommendations to Batchelder no later than Dec. 31.
Manufacturing
represents 100,000 jobs and accounts for tens of billions of dollars in
annual
sales in the 12-county region surrounding Dayton, according to a Wright
State
University class=”follow-icon”>
study commissioned by the Dayton Region Manufacturers Association.
