Cox Media
Group Ohio is eliminating its internal newspaper delivery operation, a
move
which will impact an unspecified number of employees.
The parent
company of the Dayton Daily News, starting in April, will outsource the
oversight of its newspaper delivery operation to independent
distributors.
Currently, the process is completed internally.
Michael
Athmer, communications director for CMG Ohio, would not disclose the
number of
employees impacted nor the total employment figures for the company. He
said
the change is part of an overall restructuring Cox Media Group Ohio
began in
October and the long-term effect will be neutral.
However, in
a memo Phonda Gamble, vice president of circulation, on March 8 sent
employees
detailing the changes, she addressed job cuts.
“Because
this change impacts current jobs, CMG Ohio managers have notified
employees and
they will have the opportunity to apply for other jobs within our
company, take
part in the independent distributor selection process, or they will be
provided
with severance and/or retirement option.”
The
complete transition is expected to be completed by the end of this
year,
according to a company news release. CMG Ohio opted to move to the
distributorship model for home delivery given its success in the
company’s
Dallas, Charlotte and West Palm, Fla. markets. The company plans to
hire up to
nine distribution companies to perform the work, Gamble said.
Athmer
would not comment on the cost savings the company plans to see in
switching to
the new distribution model.
According
to the news release, CMG Ohio’s distribution footprint will not be
impacted.
The first step in the distribution
transition is a distributor fair, which will be 9 a.m. March 28 at
Media
Center. Employees whose jobs are impacted by the transition have the
option to
apply to run their own distributorship.
