jobless rate nudges up to 8.8%

After
reaching its lowest level in three years in December, the Dayton-area
unemployment rate slightly climbed in January.
The January
jobless rate for the Dayton metropolitan statistical area was 8.8
percent,
according to Friday data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family
Services .
The local
unemployment rate was 8 percent in December and 10.4 percent in January
2011.
The Dayton
MSA includes Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties.
In the city
of Dayton, the unemployment rate also worsened. The city unemployment
rate was
10.4 percent, up from 9.6 percent in December and down from 12.3 in
January
2011.
The
Montgomery County jobless situation also worsened in January. The
unemployment
rate rose to 9 percent, climbing from 8.3 percent in December. The
unemployment
rate in January 2011 was 10.6 percent.
January
unemployment rates by county:
• Butler,
8.4 percent, up from 7.6 in December and down from 9.6 percent in
January 2011,
• Clark,
8.8 percent, up from 7.9 December and down from 10.2 percent in January
2011,
• Darke,
9.2 percent, up from 7.7 percent in December and down from 10.5 percent
in
January 2011,
• Greene, 8
percent, up from 7.3 percent in December and down from 9.5 percent in
January
2011,
• Miami,
8.6 percent, up from 7.4 percent in December and down from 10.6 percent
in
January 2011,
• Preble,
9.7 percent, up from 8.6 percent in December and down from 11.3 percent
in
January 2011,
• Shelby,
8.8 percent, up from 7.8 in December and down from 11.1 percent in
January
2011, and
• Warren,
7.5 percent, up from from 6.7 December and down from 9 percent in
January 2011.
The Dayton
region’s jobless rate is slightly higher than the Ohio average. Ohio’s
unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in January, up from 7.6 in December.
