Boy Called Hero
in Darke County Fire That Damaged Home
GREENVILLE TWP. -- A house fire in Greenville Township leaves a man
homeless, but it could have been much worse if not for the man’s young
neighbor.
The fire broke out around 7:30pm Tuesday on Wood Avenue. Mr.
Mitchell owns the home and says he was cooking some brats on his grill,
when the next thing he knew, a neighbor boy was ringing his doorbell.
“I looked outside and over to the shed,’’ Mr. Mitchell told us, “and
there was just flames everywhere. That little boy notified me,
he’s a hero.’’
Mr. Mitchell’s shed was destroyed by the fire and the flames did spread
to his home. Firefighters removed all the insulation from the
attic to help stop the flames from spreading even further.
Something little Jacob Hinshaw helped with too, using a lesson he
learned in school in real life, “When I went on a field trip I went to
a fire department and they told me if there was a fire find the person
first you saw and told.”
The firefighters on scene commended Jacob for his quick thinking.
Investigators can’t say yet what exactly what caused the fire, however
the homeowner was using his grill at the time. The house is not livable
so Mr. Mitchell will be staying with family.
