Ohio is not
consumed by government workers. In fact, the state ranks near the
bottom when
it comes to the percentage of workers employed by government entities.
According
to an On Numbers analysis of seasonally adjusted data from the U.S.
Bureau of
Labor Statistics
, government jobs in
Ohio totaled 764,900 in March. That equates to 14.9 percent of the
state’s
workforce and put it at No. 41 among the states for government
employment.
It comes as
no surprise that Washington, D.C. is the overall government jobs
leader. The
district’s workforce included 247,000 government positions as of March,
accounting for 33.4 percent of its total complement of 738,600 jobs.
Alaska is
the runner-up, with 25.8 percent of its workers being employed by the
federal,
state or local governments. Rounding out the top five are Wyoming (25.5
percent), New Mexico (24.3 percent) and Mississippi (22.7 percent).
Five other
states have crossed the 20 percent threshold: Oklahoma, Hawaii, West
Virginia,
Montana and Alabama.
Pennsylvania
ranked last on the list, with just 12.8 percent of its total jobs
relating to
government entities.
Federal,
state and local governments employ 22.2 million workers nationwide,
equaling
16.7 percent of the U.S. workforce of 132.7 million.
