DARKE
COUNTY, Ohio — A bond of $1 million was set for Justin Douglas Thomas
during a
video arraignment in Darke County on a charge of attempted murder
Wednesday.
Judge
Jonathan Hein entered a plea of not guilty on Thomas’ behalf and
appointed a
public attorney to defend him.
Hein
followed the recommendation of the Darke County Prosecutor R. Kelly
Ormsby III
and issued a bond of $1 million.
Thomas, 33,
will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on May 16.
Thomas was
arrested following a physical dispute with his wife that included
gunfire at
13394 U.S. 127, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office said.
According
to sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Mike Burns, a woman called the county 911
center at
about 4:10 p.m. to report that her husband had slapped her during a
domestic
dispute, threatened her and announced that he was “now going for after
his
gun,” according to the sheriff’s office.
As deputies
were en route, it was learned that Thomas fired a shot at his wife that
missed
and that other family members were close by during the incident,
according to a
preliminary investigation. No one was injured.
Thomas was
arrested at the residence.
Police said
Thomas was out on bond stemming from an incident in September 2011 that
resulted in a charge of aggravated robbery and abduction, which also
involved a
gun. Trial on those charges is set for May 30.
