debate: Sharp reaction to Obama's 'bayonets'

President Barack Obama sparked an onslaught of Twitter commentary,
Google searches and fact-checking when he referenced “horses and
bayonets” in Monday night’s third and final presidential debate.
“Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the
nature of our military has changed,” Obama said, after Gov. Mitt Romney
jabbed the president for, he said, overseeing a Navy that is smaller
than at any time since 1917.
According to statistics from Twitter, the peak number of tweets per
minute occurred after Obama’s comment. There were 6.5 million tweets
during the debate, according to the company, with 105,767 tweets per
minute in the wake of the “bayonets” line.

Data from Google revealed that “horses and bayonets” was the top rising
search of the night, while on Facebook, several community pages titled
“horses and bayonets” cropped up.
After the debate, reporters offering post-event coverage noted that
bayonets are, in fact, used in military training — something that
Twitter picked up on as well.

Some conservatives, like Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, also condemned
the remark.
”President Obama’s comment about ‘horses and bayonets’ was an insult to
every sailor who has put his or her life on the line for our country,”
McDonnell tweeted.
