Report: Iran
behind cyberattacks on big banks
Monday, October 15, 2012
A series of cyberattacks on big banks in recent weeks is part of a
growing cyber ware between Iran and the U.S., according to a report in
the New York Times citing American intelligence officials.
Iran created a cyber unit as part of its military in 2011 that American
officials believe is behind the attacks on at least six American banks
and the oil industry in Saudi Arabia recently, the Times' report said.
The Web sites of banking giants PNC Financial Services Group, JPMorgan
Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America, Wells Fargo & Co. and U.S.
Bancorp were all hit with denial of service attacks recently that were
initially believed to be coming from hackers in Iran.
All of those banks have operations in the Dayton region.
