Darke County Sheriff’s Office…
250 Marijuana plants
trafficking operation shut down
On September 20, 2012 at approximately 1:39 AM Darke County Sheriff’s
Deputies responded to 3938 Red River West Grove Road to investigate a
tip received earlier in the evening on suspicious drug activity.
Deputies arrived and observed from the road what appeared to be
numerous marijuana plants growing in the yard. Deputies
approached the property on foot to investigate further when they were
met by the resident armed with a shotgun. Deputies identified
themselves and the resident immediately cooperated and disarmed
himself. Two adults (mother and son) live at the address and were
cooperative in the investigation and consented in a search of the
property. The investigation and search revealed a significant
outdoor marijuana growing operation.
Darke County Deputies recovered 250 mature marijuana plants that ranged
from 5 to 10 feet tall. In addition there was evidence indicating
that some harvesting and processing had already occurred. The
plants were located in 4 plots on the property and less than marginal
attempts were used to conceal them. Each plant is valued at
$1,000.
Due to the size and number of marijuana plants two dump trucks from the
Darke County Garage and Darke County Engineer’s Office were used to
haul away the illegal plants. The City of Greenville Fire
Department assisted the Sheriff’s Office by providing a ladder truck
that was necessary to document the scene from the air through
photographs.
No arrests were made at this time; therefore the names of the residents
are being withheld. The case will be forwarded to the Darke
County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Charges or indictments
will be pending this review. It is likely that felony charges
will be forthcoming for Illegal Cultivation of/and or Possession of
Marijuana. The level of felony will be determined by the weight
of the illegal substance which is pending. Weight estimations are
expected to be hundreds of pounds.
The Darke County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the public’s involvement
in providing information on criminal activity. It is tips and
information such as this that help us to make our community safer and a
more desirable place to live. If you observe any suspicious or
criminal activity please report it immediately to the Darke County
Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency.
