Top
10 states for parent involvement in
education
By Tristan Navera
Ohio
scored a high ranking from the Center for
Education Reform for the amount of involvement parents can have in
their
children’s education.
The
state took fourth place in the Center’s
“Parent Power Index” which ranks states based on the number of school
choices,
teacher quality, transparency of schools for information, and online
learning
options available to parents.
Among
the qualities of the state, the Center
praised the higher-than-average number of charter school choices, as
well as
high teacher quality and online options.
“Parents
are a child’s first teacher,” said CER
President Jeanne Allen in a news release, “Policymakers and educators
nationwide are clamoring for more parental involvement, knowing that
involvement positively impacts student learning. But without real
power, parent
involvement is meaningless. In the top 10 states, not only is Parent
Power more
highly valued, but it is resulting in higher learning gains.”
