April is Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Month
March 29, 2013
The
Ohio Supreme Court Law Library
is featuring a display in conjunction with the ASPCA's "Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals Month."
Laws
on the prevention of cruelty
to animals will be on display at the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial
Center this
month.
In
conjunction with ASPCA’s
“Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month,” the Ohio Supreme Court Law
Library is
featuring a display that will be open for viewing by the public from
April 1 to
May 24.
In
addition to highlighting recent
Ohio legal developments in the areas of breed-specific legislation,
exotic
animals, and puppy mills, the court’s “Animal Law” display will feature
the
work of retired Sergeant David Hunt of the Franklin County Sheriff’s
Office,
one of the country’s foremost experts on dog fighting. Hunt will be a
featured
guest speaker at the Ohio Supreme Court on April 18 at noon.
Hunt
has testified before Congress
and the Ohio General Assembly, investigated hundreds of illegal
dog-fighting
rings, and served as a consultant and expert witness for numerous
nationwide
investigations, including that of former Atlanta Falcons quarterback
Michael
Vick.
In
training sessions he conducts
with HSUS (Humane Society of the United States), Hunt provides an
important
service educating law enforcement officers, lawmakers, prosecutors,
judges, and
the general public about the link between animal cruelty and other
serious
crimes such as drug trafficking, gambling, racketeering, and domestic
violence.
Hunt
currently volunteers with the
Capital Area Humane Society as a law enforcement specialist, and in
2011 he was
honored as an ASPCA Public Servicen Award winner.
Information
on visiting the Moyer
Judicial Center is available on the Supreme Court website. The Law
Library is
on the 11th Floor and is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
