Cold spell hits county
Brrr…
Darke County and the Miami Valley have been experiencing extreme cold
temperatures since Sunday night, with lows reaching 5 degrees
Fahrenheit and wind chills as much as 10 degrees below zero.
On Monday it warmed up to 18 degrees with light snow. The dry blowing
snow caused multiple traffic incidents, including a 52-car pile-up on
I-75.
Several Darke County residents reported their car doors were frozen
shut.
“Luckily I could start the engine from outside the car so it would warm
up enough for me to get the door open,” said one. Another had to crawl
across the front seat from the passenger side to get into her car.
Other residents reported their car windows freezing shut. A mother said
her shower plumbing had frozen… resulting in shower delays for her
family.
What’s coming? Slightly warming temperatures with occasional snow
flurries Wednesday and Thursday, and a light accumulation of snow on
Friday. Sunday is expected to start the climb back up with a 28 degree
high predicted. WHIO-TV is showing 32 degrees for Dayton and the Miami
Valley.
Monday will be the first time in a little over a week that Darke County
temperatures will be above freezing. A high of 37 degrees is predicted;
Tuesday is expected to be in the forties.
