Darke
County warns residents after fake worker
incident
Man invades home, claimed to be from health
department
GREENVILLE
— The Darke County health
commissioner and the sheriff’s office are warning residents to always
ask for
proper identification whenever anyone visits their home claiming to be
on
official business.
“Do
you ever let anybody in your house if they
don’t have ID? Nope. It’s just the wise thing to do,” Tom Riley, a
county
resident, told News Center 7’s Mark Bruce on Tuesday. “You just gotta
be
careful nowadays.”
On
Saturday, Jan. 5, a man returned home to
find someone sitting in his kitchen claiming to be a health department
worker.
When
the resident asked the person what he was
doing, the person left, according to the sheriff’s office.
The
person wasn’t identified and no arrests
have been made, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Sometimes
people that aren’t our employees are
trying to gain entry for alternate purposes and people need to be aware
that it
is somebody doing things for the right reasons,” county Health
Commissioner
Terry Holman said.
He
advises that his department is not surveying
or going door to door on any projects. If his people were, Holman said,
residents would know about it.
Holman
said that typically, his department
notifies or puts information in the media about surveys or whenever his
workers
might be in neighborhoods at a certain point in time.
“If
they are there for legitimate reason they
should have an ID and if not, don’t let them in,” Holman said.
The
sheriff’s department says the bottom line
is that if someone knocks on your door and you’re not comfortable with
who they
say they are, call 911.
