Police Beat
Busy week for
Greenville police with assaults and child endangering
On June 21 Marcie Manning, 430 E. Fifth St., called to report a small
boy walked into her apartment. She had no idea who the child was and
she could not understand him. The child had only a pull-up diaper that
was soiled with loose stools and urine. He had a backpack with
miscellaneous clothing inside. One officer transported the child to the
police department while another canvassed the neighborhood. Darke
County Childrens Services was contacted and a representative arrived
with clothing and a clean diaper. No calls were received reporting a
missing child. Juvenile Courts Judge Jason Aslinger gave permission for
DCCS to take the child into custody; he was taken to the
representative’s office. Digital images had been taken of the child and
mailed to the media, and the Family Health Center for the staff.
Approximately four hours later, Tyler Kissinger, 427-1/2 E. Fourth St.,
contacted the police and said his son had gotten out of the house while
he was sleeping. Kissinger identified the boy as his son and said he
had thought his roommate Zach Gore was watching the boy and Kissinger’s
daughter. The daughter had been placed in a crib; and was soaked with
urine. It was noted she had been unattended for approximately six
hours. Children’s Services was called for removal of the girl. The
apartment was scattered with clothing and miscellaneous trash. The door
to the apartment had a broken plastic child proof handle and only
contained a door knob lock. Kissinger was cited for Child Endangering.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
On June 24, police were dispatched to 315 13th St. for a domestic
dispute. The victim, Christina Shepherd, was in the rear of an
ambulance. She advised that she and the suspect, Todd Pitman, who was
father of her unborn child, were having an argument. Shepherd said she
last heard Pitman state “I said so” and then was on the couch in pain
on the right side of her stomach. She said he kept yelling and her,
then the next thing she remember was speaking with a paramedic. Pitman
denied striking Shepherd, stating he’d been charged with domestic
violence before but had never been convicted. Shepherd’s 5-year-old
daughter said Pitman had punched Shepherd in the stomach. At Wayne
Emergency it was determined Shepherd had a red mark 4 to 5 inches long
on the right side of her stomach where she was complaining of the most
pain. Pitman was arrested for Domestic Violence and transported to the
Darke County Jail.
ASSAULT
On June 28, police were dispatched to Hummers, 644 Wagner Ave., for a
fight in progress. Two females and one male had entered the bar and one
of the females got into an argument with a patron. When Hummers owner,
Tanya Niswonger, broke the argument up and asked the woman to leave,
she was struck in the head with a beer bottle. The other female struck
Niswonger again during the struggle. As the bartender, Matt Fullenkamp,
attempted to separate the females, the male who came in with the women
kicked the left side of Fullenkamp’s face and knocked him unconscious.
Another patron, Steven Smith, also attempted to break the altercations
up and was punched in the face. The male also struck another patron,
Mark Heiser, in the face. The three suspects then left the scene,
reportedly in a white Cadillac. Niswonger, Fullenkamp and Heiser had
visible injuries. Greenville Twp. Rescue was called to the scene and
Heiser transported to Wayne ER for treatment. Both Niswonger and
Fullenkamp refused transport at the time, but were advised to seek
medical attention at Wayne Hospital.
On June 29, police responded to 308 S. Broadway for a physical
altercation occurring between several individuals in the parking lot
off Third Street. On arrival police observed Victoria Hobbs lying on
the ground with a possible suspect also on the ground. The victim’s
father, Wes Hobbs, was standing over the suspect. Witnesses, all
related to Hobbs, said the suspect and the father had gotten into a
verbal altercation after which the suspect went to his truck, pulled
out a golf club and hit Victoria in the head with it. The father was
also struck, but then struck the suspect multiple times, eventually
grabbing the golf club. A bartender at Sportzters, also on S. Broadway,
said that the suspect had been ordered out of the bar earlier. Both
Victoria and Wes received medical attention at Wayne Hospital. The
suspect refused medical attention. The officer indicated he was going
to get additional statements and check for a possible video but that
charges will be pending.
On June 30, police responded to Danny’s Bar, 308 S. Broadway, for a
fight in progress. There was an altercation between Harmon and Chris
Vanata. Christine Dufer attempted to break up the fight; both Dufer and
Chris had injuries requiring medical attention. Charges may be pending
later. Officers were also advised of another assault that had taken
place with a knife. Officers found a knife with blood on it in the
north end of the parking lot behind Danny’s. The knife was taken as
evidence but at this time there is no suspect or victim.

On June 28, police were dispatched to Hotrods & Harleys, 1240 Russ
Road, for a fight in progress. The suspect, Thomas Boner, was found to
have an active GPD arrest warrant for Failure to Appear for a probation
revocation hearing for DUI and DUS (Suspension). He was arrested and
during the pat-down a substance resembling marijuana and a smoking pipe
were found. He was transported to Darke County Jail, and also cited for
possession of drug paraphernalia and drugs.
On June 28, police were dispatched to 726 Central Ave. on a “Keep the
Peace” request. At that time it was determined that Melissa A. Miller
had an active felony warrant out of Miami Co. for burglary. She was
arrested and transported to the Miami Co. line where custody was
transferred to Miami Co.
On June 28, police were dispatched to 503 E. Third St. that Darke
County Adult Probation had Dolly Bailey in custody regarding an active
warrant. It was for Failure to Appear regarding domestic violence.
Bailey was arrested and transported to Darke County Jail.
BAD CHECKS
The manager at Readmore Hallmark, 524 S. Broadway, filed a Bad Check
report on Jeanna L. Boner, 248 Fairview Ave., for a $101.63 check that
had been returned from the bank. A certified letter had been sent to
Boner requesting remittance in cash or Cashier’s Check by May 29.
Defendant was served on June 27 at her home address of 323 Vine St.
VANDALISM
On June 28, police were dispatched to Hummers, 644 Wagner Ave.,
regarding a fight. The suspects had left in the direction of Rhoades
Ave. in a white Cadillac. The defendant, Heather Werner, was seen
exiting the passenger side of the Cadillac. Shawn Bowles exited the
driver’s side and ran. Werner started to walk back to Hummers, was told
to stop but didn’t. At that time she was placed in handcuffs. Defendant
had strong odor of alcohol and her speech was slurred. The officer then
placed Werner in the back of the cruiser while he checked to see if the
vehicle they were in was stolen or if there was damage at Hummers. The
defendant slipped out of her handcuffs and started hitting the window
of the cruiser. She was told to stop and handcuffed again. She slipped
out of them again and continued hitting the window, knocking it off its
track. Werner was placed under arrest for Felony Vandalism and
transported to Darke County Jail.
BURGLARY/THEFT
On June 29, Carl M. Henninger, 424 Front St., contacted police
regarding a burglary. He said his window air conditioner had been
pushed into his living room where his PS3, games and controller were
found missing. Front and back doors were locked. He thought entry had
been made through after the removal of the air conditioner. Henninger
indicated a possible suspect, but the individual was not available for
questioning. There were no witnesses.
On June 30, Karen R. Nealeigh reported that her car had been broken
into while she was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 131 E. Fourth St. The
front passenger window had been broken out and her purse, which had
been sitting on the floorboard, had been stolen. The purse contained
