Ohio
tops nation in May job growth
By Dan Horn
Ohio
topped the nation last month when it added
32,100 jobs, far more than any other state and the most here in a
single month
in at least a decade.
Kentucky
and Indiana saw smaller gains from
April to May.
The
monthly state jobs report from the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that most of Ohio’s new jobs came
from
professional and business services, leisure and hospitality,
government,
education and health services. Growth in manufacturing and financial
services
was flat.
The
state’s unemployment rate remained at 7
percent, still better than the national rate of 7.6 percent.
Unemployment in
Indiana fell from 8.5 to 8.3 percent, and Kentucky’s rate rose from 7.9
to 8.1
percent.
The
unemployment rate is based on a household
survey while the monthly jobs numbers come from employers. Ohio’s rate
may have
remained unchanged, despite the additional jobs, because more people
entered
the labor force or because employed people took on more than one job.
Thirty-three
states saw job growth last month,
with Ohio outpacing Texas for the top spot. Texas gained 19,500 jobs
and
Michigan, which was third on the list, added 18,100.
