Smith, Surber,
students honored at School Board
By Bob Robinson
GREENVILLE – The Greenville City School District Board of Directors
accepted the resignations of several teachers, coaches and staff
members at its regular monthly meeting on June 13. Notable among these
were Michelle Smith, 32-year Vocal Music Teacher and the leader of
Greenville’s successful Wavaires program. Smith was also the District’s
Vocal Music Director and Fine Arts Department Chair. She resigned for
retirement purposes.
Also resigning were Kyle Vanover, Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach,
and Edward Porter, Cross Country Coach.
Additional resignations were accepted from Janice Beyke, seventh grade
teacher, Paul Siefring, food service, Kathleen Stammen, Coordinator
ABLE (retirement), and Margie Heitkamp, Sophomore Class Advisor.
It was noted that there are already applications for some of the open
positions.
The Board also noted four District Highlights for outstanding
accomplishment.
Smith was congratulated on her years of service and her leadership with
the Vocal Music Choirs and the Wavaires.
Tara Guillozet received the 2012-2013 Board of Education Outstanding
Art Award for the district. Her award-winning art piece will be
displayed at Memorial Hall.
Valedictorian Erica Waller and Salutatorian Trevor Fulton, Class of
2013, were congratulated for their “outstanding academic
accomplishment.”
David Miller, on behalf of Ohio State Auditor Dave Yost, presented the
Ohio Auditor of State Award with Distinction to Carla Surber, GSD
Treasurer, for “excellence in financial reporting.”
This is her second year in a row to have received this award.
The board also extended commendations to students and staff for their
accomplishments throughout the year. Baseball Coach Eric Blumenstock
and Softball Coach Jerrod Newland were named Co-Coaches of the year for
their respective sports. Also commended was Dennis Kiser for being
selected as MVTCA Coach of the Year and Ally Russell for being selected
First Team All Ohio in softball for 2013. Sixteen commendations were
extended to individuals for their accomplishments in various areas.
“These promote excellent reputations for our kids and staff members,”
Supt. Doug Fries said.
In other business the board discussed the wiring needed for the tennis
courts, noting that security lighting is needed on all six courts, but
that there is not enough activity to justify lighting for playing on
all courts. Three courts will be lit for play while the other three
will have security lighting only.
Supplemental contracts for 2013-2014 were issued to Tracy Haines for
Varsity Girls Golf at an annual $2,178, and Gail Hartings as Varsity
Asst. Girls Basketball coach at $1,174.
Board member Ben Studabaker objected to the timing of the Hartings
appointment noting it should be delayed until the new coach is hired
and allowed to make his or her own decision.
Student handbooks were approved for the 2013-2014 school year following
comments from Studabaker that he was concerned about the inconsistency
in the wording for the different buildings. It was noted that the
handbooks were directed toward the ages of the students in the
buildings.
Three outdated textbooks from Woodland Primary School were approved for
disposal. They were two dictionaries and a children’s thesaurus. School
board member Fred Matix asked if the books could be made available to
take home.
“Some of these homes will never have one of these books,” Matix said.
Fries said that they will.
Surber reported that there is a new assessment required by Columbus on
“how we spend our dollars;” also we’re going to have to deal with the
changes required under the Affordable Care Act.
There was discussion on students paying their fees in order to receive
transcripts and/or diplomas. Studabaker noted his concern over the
punishment of kids for the actions of their parents.
Several thousand dollars were donated from various sources for
different programs in the District.
Chris Mortensen said there were donations from eight individuals to use
for the Junior High School’s Attendance Incentive Program.
