Beagle Initiative Aims to Help
Schools Save on
Electricity Bills
COLUMBUS–State
Senator Bill Beagle (R–Tipp
City) today introduced legislation to allow a consortium of school
districts to
utilize tax-exempt bonds for the pre-purchase of electricity in bulk.
“This
legislation will allow our school
districts to take advantage of a shared service opportunity that
promises real
savings on overhead costs,” Beagle said. “Every dollar we save on the
electric
bill is another dollar that can be spent educating our children.”
Senate
Bill 59 specifically will allow
education energy councils, groups of school districts formed expressly
for the
joint purchasing of energy, to qualify as a “Council of Government,”
allowing
them the option of issuing tax-exempt bonds to finance the costs of
energy.
“Allowing
our schools to access tax-exempt bond
funding could save them real dollars,” Beagle continued. “The State
needs to
provide our local jurisdictions every tool we can to help them share
services
and manage tight budgets.”
Senator
Bill Beagle serves the people of Ohio’s
5th Senate District, which includes Miami and Preble Counties as well
as
portions of Montgomery and Darke Counties. He presides as the Chairman
of the
Senate Standing Committee on Workforce & Economic Development.
