Study:
A little Facebook won’t hurt you

If
you’re feeling guilty about sneaking onto
Facebook at the office, you can relax: It’s actually helping you to do
your
job.
So
says a new study.
Social
media and digital devices are allowing
people to be more flexible about when and where they work, researchers
at the
United Kingdom’s University of Warwick found.
“We
found that the ubiquitous digital
connectivity altered workers’ sense of ‘presence,’” professor Joe
Nandhakumar
said in a press release, “and helped rather than hindered the effective
completion of collective tasks.”
Nandhakumar
and colleagues in the Warwick
Business School found that social media fits with modern work demands
in which
jobs are no longer a nine-to-five proposition.
“There
is a growing body of evidence which
suggests that instead of adopting uncritically popular views of digital
connectivity as something disruptive, organizations should instead
investigate
further,” he said. “They should explore how employees can be better
equipped
and empowered to manage their time and productivity in this
environment.”
The
study examined technology companies in the
UK, Finland and Germany. It’s being published in the Information
Systems
Journal.
