Police Beat
Forgery, assault, menacing… and a case of “you can’t make this up”

On Aug. 26 police were dispatched to the home of the victim who discovered an unknown male sleeping on her couch. He was covered with a comforter; the victim didn’t know him. She went to a neighbor and called 911. Police knew the suspect and woke him up. They asked him if he knew where he was. At first he said at home, then realized he didn’t know. The suspect was wearing a t-shirt, shorts and one sock. His left leg had a large laceration. He stated he had gotten married Saturday and went into town with a group to drink. He didn’t remember if he was dropped off in a vehicle or attempted to walk to his parents’ house. He came in through the back door. His shoes were found four houses north of the victim’s residence and his one sock was found on another street. Police took a statement from the victim and released the suspect to his mother.

FORGERY

On Aug. 28 police were contacted regarding two separate forgery attempts, one of which was successful, at Second National Bank. The first was at 1302 Wagner Ave. A suspect presented a check drawn on Home Idea Center Inc. out of Ft. Recovery. The suspect was a white male in his 40’s wearing blue pants and a gray shirt. He used a fake Virginia driver’s license under the name of Brian Alister. The teller was familiar with Home Idea Center and a check in the amount requested seemed strange, so she called to verify the check. At that time the suspect became nervous and left the bank. The second incident occurred at the Wal-Mart branch, 1501 Wagner Ave. A white male with a white mustache and bald head, and appeared to be in his mid 50’s, wanted to cash a check from the Home Idea Center in Ft. Recovery. The check was made out to Scott V. Ruther. The suspect gave the teller a Michigan ID card with that name. The teller made sure there was enough money in the account for the check, made a copy of the suspect’s ID and gave him the money for the check. Police have no suspects at this time.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT/MENACING

On Aug. 29 police were dispatched to 801 E. Main St. regarding a domestic incident. The victim was locked in a bedroom while the suspect, Chris Schlamb, was trying to get in, reportedly using a hammer. No one answered the door when police arrived so they called the victim who advised the front door was unlocked. Schlamb was in the living room when police entered. There was a hatchet in the kitchen which Schlamb indicated was the “hammer.” The victim advised police Schlamb had come home drunk and started yelling, left, then came back later and went to sleep. The victim and three juveniles went to bed and locked the door to the bedroom. Schlamb woke up about 4:30 a.m. and knocked on the door wanting to know where the Tums were. He went to the basement to get the hatchet to break through the door. He reportedly threatened several times to strangle the victim. Schlamb was arrested and taken to the Darke County Jail. He was served with a summons for aggravated menacing.

On Sep. 3 police were dispatched to 1199 E. Russ Road, A11, regarding a domestic incident. The victim and the defendant, Mike Landis, reportedly were arguing over her asking him to leave their relationship. He refused. He reportedly starting yelling and throwing things. A juvenile came out of a room because of the noise; the victim told the defendant not to touch the child; he punched her twice in the face, once on each cheek. She pushed him away between punches then huddled on the floor, screaming. Landis kicked a coffee table and threw some items from the third floor apartment onto the back yard. Landis told police he got hit so he pushed back but he didn’t hit her. He was complaining of chest pain so he was transported to Wayne Emergency. When Wayne Hospital released Landis he was placed under arrest for domestic violence. Landis became upset and began using profanity and making threats. He was verbally abusive to the arresting officer. He said he was psychotic and didn’t care. He was issued a misdemeanor citation for domestic violence and transported to Darke County Jail.

On Sept. 2 a police officer was dispatched to Walker Street and Harrison Avenue to assist another officer who was writing out a citation for Herman Linder. The citation was for misuse of 911. Linder was yelling from his residence and warned to stop or he could be arrested. His speech was slurred and he had an odor of alcohol. After the citation was issued police started to leave when Linder called to them to wait. He walked toward the cruiser with an open beer can. He was noticeably staggering and could barely stand. He was told not to enter the roadway or he would be charged criminally. Linder ignored the officers. One officer took his beer can and emptied it. Linder became aggressive and was arrested for disorderly conduct. He was also cited for an open container.

ASSAULT

On Aug. 31 police were dispatched to 625 E. Third St. regarding an assault complaint. The victim, Dustin Bailey, had an injury to his right ear, left shoulder and upper right hand corner of his chest. He was bleeding and asked if he wanted a rescue squad. Bailey said no. Bailey said the suspect, who was later identified as Rob Rismiller, asked if he knew a person by name. When Bailey said no, Rismiller started hitting him in the face and chest. Rismiller was pulled off by two other individuals, took a crowbar out of his vehicle then changed his mind and left. He was identified by the license plate number on his vehicle. Rismiller first denied involvement, then acknowledged it saying he was attacked with a brick by an unknown suspect so he started the fight. The incident occurred because Rismiller wanted a juvenile at this location to stop harassing his daughter. Rismiller was charged with assault.

THEFT/BURGLARY

On Aug. 24 police were dispatched to the 200 block of Washington Avenue regarding theft from a vehicle. Michael James noticed the back passenger side window of his vehicle was broken and a money bag containing approximately $1,100 was gone. No suspects or witnesses.

On Aug. 24 police were dispatched to 1189 Holly Hill Dr. Apt. 12 regarding a burglary. The victim Corbin Curtner said he left his residence on Aug. 23 and returned to find someone had been in his apartment and removed a TV, a Playstation 3 and video games. Curtner advised police of a possible suspect. Nothing further at this time.

DANGEROUS ANIMAL

On Aug. 17 police were dispatched to the 300 block of E. Fourth Street regarding a “vicious pitbull at large.” The dog was located at 314 E. Fourth St. The pitbull was barking and appeared highly aggressive toward anyone in the area. It appeared to have gotten out of the house through an open window. The dog warden was contacted for assistance. The officer recognized the dog from a previous encounter on Aug. 4, where it had charged and almost bitten the officer. Michele LeMaster, the owner of the dog, was given a warning the first time. This time she was cited for dog at large.

WARRANT ARREST

On Aug. 22 police observed Jeremiah Burkhart standing on the front porch of his residence at 750 Martin St. He had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, one for FTA trespass and one for failure to serve 25 days on an attempted simulation. On seeing the officers Burkhart ran inside. Officers were then admitted by Burkhart’s mother and subsequently found him hiding in the attic. Upon arrest for the warrants he complained of chest pains and shortness of breath. Greenville Rescue was called and transported him to Wayne Hospital for treatment for an anxiety attack. Burkhart was then transported to Darke County Jail.
