Detective
resigns after violating department policy
DARKE COUNTY – “Shocked” was the common reaction from staff of the
Darke County Sheriff’s Office after learning of the sudden resignation
of one of the department’s detectives last week.
According to a statement from the department, Detective Corey M. Turner
was placed on administrative leave immediately after disclosing to his
supervisor, on Monday, Dec. 1, that he had been engaging in a personal
relationship with an adult confidential informant since September.
Though the internal investigation suggested that the relationship
occurred during Turner’s personal time, not while on duty, the conduct
is against department policy.
Turner has been with the Darke County Sheriff’s Office since April
2005. He was assigned to the Investigations Division in March 2009 as a
general assignment detective before moving to investigate mainly drug
and arson related cases late 2013. He voluntarily resigned from his
position Friday, Dec. 5 after handing in a single sentence, hand
written letter of resignation to Darke County Sheriff Toby Spencer.
“This is not something we condone. We put our heart and soul into
trying to bring criminals to justice, that means putting a lot of
liability and responsibility on our officers,” Sheriff Spencer said.
“We will pick up the pieces and move on continuing to be hard on
criminals and specifically drug activity in Darke County.”
Nearing the conclusion of the department’s internal investigation, no
evidence suggests that Turner engaged in any sort of criminal
conduct, according to a statement released to The Early Bird. Findings
from the investigation will be shared with the Darke County Prosecuting
Attorney Kelly Ormsby for further review...
