New cameras
planned for Sheriff’s vehicles
GREENVILLE – During the public questions segment of its regular public
meeting Dec. 3 Greenville resident Fred Dean asked the Darke County
Commissioners if they’d had discussions with the Sheriff about using
body cameras. Darke County Commissioner Mike Stegall said they wanted
to think about it.
“There are two problems with the ones currently available…” He said
they are too easily blocked by the officer’s actions, such has holding
his weapon or crouching behind the door of his vehicle. “Those need to
get worked out,” he added.
Earlier in the meeting the commissioners had authorized a transfer of
$250,000 into the Permanent Improvement Fund “for Sheriff’s cameras and
upkeep to buildings.” Rhoades said it won’t all be used for that but it
will be there when needed. Stegall told Dean the new cameras will be
going into all Sheriff’s vehicles… “They are improved, and even have
audio to go with them.
Also during the public questions part of the meeting, when asked about
the budget process for 2015, Commissioner Diane Delaplane said they
were “working very hard” on it. Acknowledging there were “challenges”
she declined further comment…
