House & Senate Leaders
to Mark 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
WASHINGTON, DC - House
Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
(D-NV), Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced today that they will
hold a ceremony later this month to mark the 50th anniversary of the
Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The leaders will also
present a Congressional Gold Medal in honor of the Reverend Doctor
and Mrs. Martin Luther King, Jr., who were instrumental in the law’s
passage. The Gold Medal represents Congress’s highest expression
of appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
The ceremony will take
place on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, in the Rotunda of the United States
Capitol. Additional details will be released closer to the date of
the ceremony.
NOTE: On April 7, 2014,
Congressman Boehner penned a letter to the organizers of the LBJ
Presidential Library’s Civil Rights Summit, where Boehner paid
special tribute to one of Ohio’s famous sons, Congressman William
McCulloch from Piqua. McCulloch has been famously lauded as a person
whose interest and leadership made it possible for the House to pass
the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
