improvements (with estimated costs) to Darke County Roads
and Bridges for 2014

In addition to normal road and bridge
maintenance, an estimated
$3,136,508 worth of improvements to Darke County roads and bridges is
scheduled for 2014 that will be 98 percent locally funded. Local
funds are gas tax and license fees returned monthly to the County by
the State of Ohio for County Highway operations. No real estate or
sales taxes are used to fund any of this work. The unusually high
costs of fighting snow and ice this year require us to spend part of
the cash reserves built up over many years. The integrity of the
roads and bridges must still be the highest priority. The County
Engineer and Highway Department responsibilities are 521 miles of
County road and 531 bridges on County and Township roads, which are
maintained by 30 employees. This is an average of 17 miles of road
and 17 bridges per employee.
COUNTY ROAD SURFACING: The following
thirteen County roads and
two Township Roads which total 34.30 miles are scheduled for new
asphalt surfaces during May-July at an estimated contracted
local cost of $ 2,212,000….
