Suspect
arrested in Dayton VA Medical Center shooting

One
person is in custody and one injured after a shooting at the Dayton
VA Medical Center on Monday.
The
suspect, Neil Moore, 59, a former employee of the VA, opened fire
with a revolver shortly after noon in a break room in the basement
area of the VA’s main building, striking Paul Burnside, 61, who was
shot once in the ankle. Reports indicate Burnside was struggling with
Moore over the weapon when he was shot.
Moore
served for “many years” at the VA in the housekeeping department,
but no motive was immediately known, officials said at a press
conference after the incident.
The
VA is closed to the public and all appointments have been cancelled,
said Glen Costie, administrator of the Dayton VA. Emergencies are
being referred to other area hospitals, and family looking to contact
patients currently in the VA should call their hospital rooms or the
VA’s main line.
“We
are continuing to provide care to veterans that are in our facility,
and family members need to be aware they are safe and being cared
for,” Costie said, adding mental health services will be on hand
for VA employees and people on campus.
The
first call went out at 12:10 p.m. of a shooting at VA center. The
Dayton Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office,
Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kettering Police and Ohio Department
of Natural Resources responded with two medics as well as a bomb
squad, SWAT and hostage negotiation teams, which staged nearby. They
