Two fatal accidents in Mercer County
Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announced today that his office is
investigating a pair of fatal accidents that occurred over the weekend.
The first accident occurred on State Route 219 just West of Gause Rd.
in Butler Township.
On August 22, 2015 at 11:26 am Central Dispatch received several 911
calls of a two-vehicle injury accident at that location. The
callers indicated one vehicle was a motorcycle and the other an SUV.
Through the course of the investigation it was determined that Jane E.
Fiely, age 65, of 3192 St Rte 219, Coldwater, was eastbound on State
Route 219 in a 2011 Chevy Equinox, and made a left turn into a private
drive, turning into the path of the westbound motorcycle. The 1986
Honda motorcycle was driven by Dustin A Rutter, age 24, of 321 E
College St. Coldwater, struck the passenger side of the Equinox. Mr.
Rutter was transported by Coldwater EMS to Mercer Health, where he was
later pronounced dead. Mrs. Fiely was also transported to Mercer Health
Hospital by private vehicle.
The accident remains under investigation. Deputies were assisted by
Coldwater EMS, the Coldwater Fire Department and MCERV.
The second fatal accident occurred at the intersection of State Route
707 and US Route 127.
On August 24, 2015 at 00:11 hours Central Dispatch received 9-1-1 calls
of an injury accident involving a truck and semi-tractor and trailer.
The investigation revealed Andrew J. Hughes, age 42, of 501 West
Mechanic Street in Wapakoneta was heading west on State Route 707 and
failed to stop at the stop sign located at US Rte. 127. Hughes’
1999 GMC truck was struck by a 2014 Kenworth semi-tractor and trailer
that was heading north on US Rte. 127. The semi-tractor and
trailer was operated by 55 year old Bhupinder Singh of 440 Legacy Blvd.
Greenwood, Indiana. Mr. Hughes was transported to the Van Wert
County Hospital by Rockford Squad where he was later pronounced
dead. Mr. Singh was not injured.
The accident remains under investigation. Deputies were assisted by
Rockford EMS, Rockford Fire Department, and MCERV.
This would be the third fatal crash in Mercer County for 2015, and the
second fatal crash recorded this weekend.
