Celina resident
threatens to jump from water tower
On 02/16/2015 the Celina Police Department handled two calls involving
31 year old Reuben Rios of Celina. At about 5:00 PM officers were
sent to the Shell gas station in the 300 block of S. Main St. upon a
report of Rios attempting entry into an employee’s car and attempting
to steal a candy bar. Officers spoke with Rios and he denied the
allegation. He told officers he was without a job and had no
place to stay. He was not charged at that time.
At 7:55 PM officers were sent to the water tower in the 400 block of
Grand Lake Rd. upon report that Rios was climbing the tower and
threatening to jump. Upon arrival he was an estimated 50 feet up
and using his cell phone. When he saw officers and fire fighters
arrive he climbed to the top of the ladder to a cat walk around the
tank. The catwalk is about 147 feet from the ground.
Rios would not engage officers in conversation. Department
Chaplin, Pastor Randy Christian was called to assist. He was able
to get Rios to speak with him and was ultimately able to talk him down.
Reuben Rios was on the tower about an hour and 20 minutes. He was
taken to Jt. Township E.R. in St. Mary’s by ambulance. When asked why,
he would only say he has demons he fights every day.
