Vivitrol to be
introduced to treat addiction
GREENVILLE – “The holidays are a depressing time of the year if you’re
battling addiction,” Darke County Chief Probation Officer James
Mollette said. “It’s a balancing act between providing for the family
and the drugs; it’s much easier to go back to the addiction.”
He added it’s also difficult fighting loneliness. “We do all the
encouraging things we can… meetings… any positives we can. A low
percentage of addicts are actually comfortable with what they’re
doing.” He noted, however, they realize they’re doing it for a reason,
one of which is to stay out of jail.
“There are unique challenges due to heroin,” he said. “Heroin is an
epidemic and it’s only getting worse.”
A new treatment Mollette is optimistic about is Vivitrol. In
combination with traditional treatment, such as counseling, he believes
it will be more effective than the methadone and suboxone treatments of
the past. It is designed to reduce cravings. “Methadone and suboxone
could be abused. Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection; they have to go
to a physician for it. We’re hoping it will eliminate some substance
abuse...
