Retail is changing but economic outlook is positive

GREENVILLE – “Retail as we know it is changing.” That is the general consensus of three individuals who tend to keep a finger on the pulse of local economics. According to Darke County Commissioner Mike Stegall, the brick and mortar ‘big box’ stores are going away. Main Street Greenville Executive Director Amber Garrett and Darke County Visitors Bureau Executive Director Deanna York agree.

“Visitors don’t come to Darke County to shop at big box stores they can find in their own communities,” York said. “They are looking for unique experiences… experiences that make Darke County distinct.” Garrett noted the ‘big box’ stores that recently closed in Greenville – JCPenney and Staples – are in “the process of changing their business model or struggling as a company.” JCPenney closed 40 stores in 2014; Staples closed 170. Stegall said the same thing about K-Mart and Big Lots.

“They have to change if they want to stay viable,” Stegall said. “Walmart has the nitch (for now). They keep items in stock.” Noting smaller stores will ship to the store or the home, he added, “That’s the way it’s going. You have to embrace it...
