Mercer County
Drug ‘Take
Back’ Drop Box
CELINA, OH –Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announced that his office,
which regularly participates in the DEA Drug Takeback projects as well
as maintains a Drug Drop Box, has turned over more than 350 pounds of
drugs collected in the last 18 months to the DEA for destruction. The
vast majority of the drugs taken are in pill form.
Every day, 44 people in the U.S. die from overdose of prescription
painkillers, and many more become addicted. Sheriff Grey stated “The
Drug Drop Box was installed to make getting rid of unnecessary pills
from your home easy. Most prescription abuse in teenagers start when
they take medications prescribed for an adult”. Deaths from
prescription painkillers have also quadrupled since 1999, killing more
than 16,000 people in the U.S. in 2013.
The Sheriff’s Office maintains the only Drug Drop Box in Mercer County,
and has since 2012.
While the National Drug Takeback program, sponsored by the DEA,
collects unwanted drugs on a regular basis, the Drug Drop Box is
maintained in the lobby of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and drugs
can be dropped into the box at any time, making getting rid of unused
or unwanted drugs convenient.
