4 Teens Honored
For Positive Deeds In the Community
Youth Commission awards highlight volunteer service done by youth

Every Saturday, Teresa Lennon unabashedly knocks on the doors of 50 to
60 neighbors, reminding children in the 86-unit Los Medanos Housing
Project in Bay Point about church the next day.
Then on Sunday, she knocks again, helping the children scramble onto
the bus that picks them up for the service at Grace Free Will Baptist
Church in Concord.
When the 17-year-old isn't busy at church, she is organizing projects
with other youth to improve the neighborhood. They pick up recycling
items from residents and mow the lawns of senior citizens.
"Sometimes it is overwhelming, but I enjoy it," said Lennon.
Lennon, a junior at Mount Diablo High School, recently won recognition
for her hard efforts. She was one of four teenagers chosen from 36
nominees for the Contra Costa County Youth Hall of Fame.
The winners were announced last week at the Contra Costa County Board
of Supervisors meeting.
Nathan Burgess-Kees, a Pinole Valley High School senior, was honored in
the category of Sports Leadership for his work on the varsity soccer
team. As captain of the team, he raises money for the unfunded program,
keeps his teammates informed about games and practices and nurtures and
coaches other players.
Amos Cruz, an Alhambra High School senior, was honored in the category
of Unsung Hero, for his eagerness to help at the Martinez school.
Nancy Hernandez, a Pittsburg High senior, was honored in the category
of school leadership for getting out of the gang life and becoming an
impassioned advocate for change.
