Mercer Sheriff gets nearly $28,000 in grants

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announces that his office applied and received two traffic safety grants for fiscal year 2015/2016.  The Sheriff’s Office was awarded $11,159.68 for the STEP Grant (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program), and $16,739.52 for the IDEP Grant (Impaired Driving Enforcement Program).

These grants allow the Sheriff’s Office to put extra cars on Mercer County roadways, with the purpose of deterring impaired driving, aggressive driving, and distracted driving, and encourage the use of seatbelts. The ultimate goals are to reduce fatal traffic crashes, and reduce alcohol involved crashes.   During the 2014/2015 grant the Sheriff’s Office made 522 traffic stops, issued 67 citations and 476 written warnings.  Deputies also traveled 15,840 miles working the traffic grants.

The Sheriff’s Office has been awarded traffic safety grants in the past.
