Darke County Sheriff
Sheriff
cautions motorists on SR 49 detour
Darke County Sheriff Toby L. Spencer cautions motorists while traveling
around the State Route 49 closure. The State Route 49 closure is
located between Myers-Tillman Road and Hogpath Road south of
Greenville. The designated detour for this closure from
Greenville is US Route 127 south to State Route 503 south to State
Route 722 east to State Route 49. It is reversed for north
bound traffic from the Darke County line.
The area on State Route 49 between US Route 127 and State Route 722 is
open to local traffic only and those that live in the area of the
closure. Commercial truck traffic is not permitted off the
designated detour unless delivering to a specific location within the
area of the closure. Commercial truck traffic traveling on State
Route 49 between Hogpath Road and Arcanum Bears Mill Road will be cited
for operating on a closed roadway and this will be strictly
enforced. Once commercial traffic enters this area there are no
roads to accommodate commercial truck traffic and few options for
turning around. Private property and VanBuren Township roadways
have sustained property damage as a result of traffic not following the
designated detour.
Local citizens in passenger vehicles are discouraged from using
VanBuren Township roads especially Sarver Road as a main route of
travel. Sarver Road is a narrow township road and can not
accommodate two-way traffic. This has resulted in substantial
damage to the shoulder and edge of the roadway. Local
non-commercial traffic that is required to travel in this area should
use Hogpath Road to Arcanum Bears Mill Road. The roadways on this
route of travel can safely accommodate two-way passenger vehicle
traffic.
